Morana (also known as Morena, Mara, or Marzanna depending on the Slavic language) is a Slavic goddess associated with winter, death, and rebirth. She is a figure of the pagan Slavic pantheon, often depicted as the personification of winter's death, and her effigy is traditionally burned or drowned at the end of winter to symbolize the coming of spring and the rebirth of nature. She is connected to agricultural cycles and is sometimes associated with the Greek goddess Hecate or the Roman goddess Ceres.
